“Well that’ll be a tough test in the wind” said the locals when us Sassenachs explained we would be playing Whitekirk and Glen golf courses in North Berwick during a week with weather forecasts predicting strong winds and rain.

And tough it was, with the record books listing ‘breezy' to 'strong wind’, though fortunately we missed most of the rain. The increased handicap movement is in itself testament to the golfing difficulty, with the challenge of the wind being supplemented by greens on which any two putt was considered a minor victory of golfing excellence!

To help us relax and recover from daily bruising tests of golf on links courses in the wind, we had accommodation right next to the beach in North Berwick with an agonising eighty yards to walk each evening to the 'Auld Hoose' pub with good whisky and beer, and an empty darts room to boot.

The planned-for competitive week was initially undermined with Nicholas arriving with muscle damage to one shoulder, leaving Peter with a considerable challenge in the Texas Scramble: “the worst result in my golfing history” was his comment when the throw of balls for partners left him stranded with the handicapped Nicholas. In the Texas Scramble the likely losers still maintained parity up to the 12th, before finally succumbing to Richard and David three and one. However, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Peter, as Nicholas abandoned the first two competitive rounds and sought a doctor and drugs, and thus took on + 36 point score by default, only to recover for the rest of the week to outplay Peter, but still take home the Wooden Spoon!

The week of golf was a serious test of nerves, with some frightening tee shot vistas - including the spectacular blind par 3 on Glen down to a sea surrounded green, very tough rough and almost unreadable greens.

This was not a week to arrive unprepared and unpractised for links golf and wind!

Peter and David led by a shot from Richard after the first two rounds, only for Richard to make his intent known with an excellent 41 points in round 3, only losing round 4 by a point, and putting in 43 points in round 6. Richard took an 18-point lead into the final to eventually win by a comfortable margin of 13 points, after an excellent 42-point round from David in the final.

In that final round David had a fairly straightforward opportunity to win the Fionn MacCool (best Stableford points) and Wooden Chap (lowest gross score) but a single over-hit second shot into the heavy rough behind the 16th green, a shot he will remember forever, saw his chances disappear and left Richard holding both these trophies.

The Celtic Cross trophy competition included some traditionally daft ‘Beach Boules’ – “no David, you can’t put the jack four foot up in a harbour wall”, the best table tennis, darts and pool played for many years, and the increasingly usual, but unbelievable hands of Brag, Poker Dice and Yahtzee. For the first time in many years the Celtic Cross winner (David) was decided before the final Yahtzee round.

Another fantastic Rees Golf week set in the lowlands of Scotland, with some of the ReesBoysOnTour dreaming of future years where they'll be able to play on wide and level fairways, no wind, greens you can pitch to the flag, and flat, puttable greens! Another year of memories of missed or taken opportunities, and another year to dream of your perfect round on a perfect course in 2008 in the Czech Republic!
