Rees Trophy – 2011

The Rees Trophy was back to a full complement of all four players for its 26th competition thanks to a move from the usual July date to October to accommodate Peter’s house move in the summer from Switzerland to England.

Taking a risk with the October weather this was the 2011 Rees Trophy invasion of Normandy, with six rounds of golf at Clecy in La France profonde and two rounds at Omaha beach accompanied by cultural visits to the site of the Second World War Normandy landings and to the outstanding Bayeux tapestry museum. Fortunately the weather proved to be much better than forecast and the competition was played mostly in fine conditions.

The courses were tough and unusual. Golf de Clecy required the legs of a mountain goat. A hilly course set in the so called Normandie Suisse, with the unusual option of choosing between different holes between the 9th to the 11th. The classic courses at Omaha Beach were flatter, and at the Manoir course presented some water challenges, though the lack of hills was counter-balanced by the extraordinarily long distances between green and tee.

After Nicholas and David won the Texas Scramble the Normandy battle ebbed to and fro, with the Trophy leadership being held by Nicholas, David and Richard over the first five rounds. Peter made a comeback in round 5 with 43 points, enough for the Fionn MacCool, while the round six results left the field so well spread with gaps of 10, 9 and 20 shots between first to last it seemed the final would be less interesting than in the past. However, Richard pulled back 7 of the required 10 shots against the eventual winner David and Nicholas pulled back 15 of the required 20 shots against 3rd placed Peter, with both matches going down to the 17th until matters were finally settled.

The four-bedroom gîte was a quaint, 19th century house with an excellent, large fireplace, and was set in a sleepy village where a visit to the local restaurant created bewildered looks from the locals (we never determined if this was actually a restaurant or not) but the nearby town had everything required, including a cafe with pool and table football.

After a surprise early lead in the Celtic Cross by Richard, normal service was soon resumed with Nicholas winning on the last game of week by two points from Peter, making it a record four wins in a row. David broke Richard’s seven year run for the Wooden Chap with an excellent gross 82 at Omaha Beach GC and retained the Dunlop ’65 while Peter won the Hologram Man thanks to some generous handicapping on the par 3s.

Next year the summer schedule will be resumed with a first-time trip to Northern Ireland.
